Social Media Positives and Negatives questionnaire
1: What are some positives and negatives, in your experience, of Twitter?
Person A - I think Twitter is really good because you can follow your friends, see what they're up to and stuff, but it can be negative because Twitter is also a great platform for cyber bullying.
Person B - A positive of Twitter is that you can follow celebrities you like, and you know it's actually them posting stuff, not like, an assistant doing it for them. A negative could be that it's very addictive, like you feel the need to post on there all the time and it kind of takes over your life.
Person C - Twitter is a positive thing mostly because it's an easy way to post about your thoughts and what you're up to, but it's also easy for people to say negative, hurtful things.
2: What are some positives and negatives of Instagram?
Person A - Instagram is a really good platform for posting and sharing pictures, like you can share selfies, or art or photography stuff if you want, and it's easy to use, but it's also really damaging for the self-esteem, since people post lots of edited pictures of themselves to look 'perfect'.
Person B - Similarly to Twitter, Instagram is really good for following celebrities as well as your friends and family, but it's also easy to become obsessed with Instagram and want to post pictures of everything you do, even though there's no real need to.
Person C - Instagram is great for sharing art, memories, or promoting a business, but it also really negatively affects mental health when you see people posting pictures of themselves and you think to yourself like, 'oh I wish I was that pretty' or feel jealous of other people.
Secondary Research
I believe that social media in general has many positives and negatives. Twitter is a good example of this, as it has many ups and downs when it comes to all aspects of the site. For example, a fairly standard positive of Twitter is that you can easily follow your friends, family and favourite celebrities and see what they post. 'Today, thanks to Twitter, you can find the thoughts of many of the world’s greatest thinkers in art, business, politics, technology – almost any area of human achievement, all at your fingertips' says Dave Larson on https://blog.bufferapp.com/5-misunderstood-great-benefits-of-twitter. A clear negative of Twitter is all of the online harassment, bullying and abuse done by people using the site. 'Twitter makes it easy to bash others' says Dr. Peggy Drexler on https://www.huffingtonpost.com/peggy-drexler/the-top-pros-and-cons-of_b_5213691.html.
Another prominent Social Media product is Instagram, which, similarly to Twitter, has a broad range of positive and negative effects on it's users. Lots of people post edited pictures of themselves on Instagram, meaning that the people who view those pictures may suffer from self esteem issues because of that pretend body image. 'While the photo-based platform got points for self-expression and self-identity, it was also associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying and FOMO' says Amanda Macmillan on http://time.com/4793331/instagram-social-media-mental-health/. But, it's not all bad. Instagram is ultimately a great site for sharing photos and connecting with your friends.
